How to make a visited states map (free)
Mark the U.S. states you’ve visited, lived in, or want on PlacesLit, then share a link or a 9:16 Reel.
Free, no account. The working map lives on this device. Sharing is optional and mints a private /s link. These four steps match the live US studio — including Visited / Lived / Want and Reel export.
Step 1
Open the US map
Go to the US states visited map. The header toggle should read US. Your last map on this device loads from localStorage — no account.
Step 2
Pick Visited, Lived, or Want
Use the status brush at the top of the map. Gold is Visited, off-white is Lived, dashed gold is Want.
Step 3
Tap states in the order you went
Click or tap each state. Selection order becomes Play trip. Washington, D.C. is the pin — it never adds to /50.
Step 4
Share the poster or save a Reel
Open Share studio. Copy the /s link for a landscape OG card, or tap Download Reel (9:16) for Instagram Reels or TikTok. PlacesLit does not post for you.
Next: share the map or switch to countries.
This how-to lands on the live US surface. Your last selections are still there.
