This page always opens the world surface. Your last map on this device is still here — PlacesLit reads localStorage, then paints Visited, Lived, and Want on 177 countries.

Zoom and pan for small islands. Commands / Find searches by name. “Been there” is Visited + Lived out of 177. Want stays a dashed gold outline and does not add to the count. Play trip stays on the US map; this surface exports a still 9:16 Reel.

FAQ

How many states have I visited?

PlacesLit is a personal map — not a widget. Fifty states on the scoreboard, countries on the world surface, and a 9:16 card you can drop into Reels.

How many states have I visited?
PlacesLit counts the 50 U.S. states. Washington, D.C. is tracked on its own and never adds to the /50 total — even though you can still mark it on the map.
Does visiting D.C. count?
Mark D.C. if you've been — it shows as a separate badge. It is not one of the 50 states, so it does not change your percentage.
Can I map countries too?
Yes. Switch US ↔ World in the header. Zoom and pan to pick small countries; names appear as you zoom in. Countries use the same visited / lived / want statuses. The US /50 score still counts only states you’ve visited or lived in — D.C. stays off that scoreboard.
Can I export a Reel or TikTok?
Yes. Share studio defaults to a 1080×1920 vertical poster. Download the PNG and upload it yourself — PlacesLit never posts to Instagram or TikTok.
Where is my map saved?
On this device, in localStorage. Refresh keeps your selections. Sharing creates a short server-backed link so anyone — and social cards — can reload the exact map, including world statuses.
Can I edit a shared map?
Yes. Opening a share link loads an editable copy. Use “Save as my map” to replace the map stored on this device, or share again to mint a new link.
